This chapter title, Boys in Motion, aptly describes the agenda of the 18 month – 3 year old boy. Or, as Thompson/Barker say, “unrestrained childhood aggression peaks around two for both boys and girls.” (p. 69) There is an in-depth discussion of this point that is very illuminating. It is also the period of independence and autonomy – and this stage involves a much different response from parents and other primary adults in boys’ lives. Comfort items are very important in a young boy’s life. Did this part of the chapter say anything to you?
The development of independence requires some ability to use language. I would be interested in hearing from Early Childhood teachers and parents of young boys about the very interesting facts presented for the gap between language development and easing into boyhood with less aggression and frustration. In fact Michelle Anthony who wrote about teaching toddlers sign language says, “… every behavior problem is a language problem.” (p. 102) Examples? Thoughts?
